Videos are sensory experiences, stimulating the mind with evocative sights and sounds. When creating this promotional video for Scroll & Ink I sought to capture the feeling and emotion surrounding a handmade book. The texture of rich leathers and heavy papers, not to mention the whispers of sounds they make, evoke a warm, comforting nostalgia.
Scroll & Ink's branding relaunch centered around preserving memories, capturing moments, and imagining possibilities. With that in mind, I set out to capture three vignettes, each focused on the sights, sounds, and feelings of owning a handmade book. The activities the books were intended for were just as evocative for the mood, and I focused on presenting the textures of wood, the clinks of glass, and the scratches of pens.
Throughout the film I favored warm colors, particularly the rich browns that wood and leather both share, and I took care to capture every little creak of leather and rustle of paper. Music would have been a distraction, so I used a number of drawn-out atmospheric sounds as a foundation and highlighted specific moments and transitions with expressive swells.
Below, I've included some of my pre-production work developing the style of the project.
